Hiroshima Plant
World's most advanced semiconductor production center
April 1, 2008, Elpida has completed its merger-acquisition of Hiroshima Elpida Memory, formerly Elpida's wholly-owned subsidiary. The merger will centralize DRAM-related technology development, manufacturing and sales under a management structure controlled by Elpida that can deliver greater management efficiency and strengthen Elpida's business base.

Back in 2003, our main manufacturing facility, the E300 fab, initially had a monthly wafer processing capacity of 3,000 wafers. In September of that year, we founded our 100% wholly-owned subsidiary, Hiroshima Elpida Memory, and made a strong effort to increase the capacity and improve the efficiency of the E300 fab. Especially in FY2005, a large-scale investment of 190 billion yen, mostly in the E300 fab, resulted in boosting our overall wafer processing capacity by 23,900 wafers year on year to 54,700 wafers in March 2006.
Aside from the investment, another reason for this significant short-term increase in production capacity is the strong understanding that Hiroshima Elpida Memory employees have of the structure of their work functions. For example, the Manufacturing Department at Hiroshima Elpida Memory has the lead role of working on production improvements. Engineers and operators from the Process Engineering Department and other departments provide full backing to the Manufacturing Department in order to raise productivity. Hiroshima Elpida Memory has also found new ways to greatly reduce lead times from the wafer input to the fab to output from the fab, and it has put in place a quick-response feedback system to resolve production troubles. All of these steps have made it possible to increase the volume of wafer processing and at the same time improve yields, which are important for saving costs in an industry that normally spends heavily on capital investment.
