TOKYO, October 9, 2003 - Elpida Memory, Inc (Elpida), Japan's leading global supplier of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), today announced the development of the industry's first 0.10 micron, 1 Gigabit DDR2 SDRAM component at 533 Megabits per second (Mbps) operation - the fastest and highest density main memory available for server applications. The component is the latest addition to Elpida's current DDR2 product portfolio that also includes a high-performance 512 Megabit DDR2 device.
"1 Gigabit is the next major milestone for DRAM density and DDR2 is the most advanced DRAM architecture available," said Yukio Sakamoto, president and CEO for Elpida Memory, Inc. "Elpida's first silicon based on our 0.10 micron process technology was successfully produced at our state-of-the-art 300mm fab."
Elpida's leading-edge technology produced superior first silicon yields, and Elpida expects excellent volume yields of its 1 Gigabit DDR2 devices. The new devices also allow either DDR or DDR2 to be produced on the same chip; therefore, requests for conventional DDR SDRAM can easily be met by switching between DDR and DDR2 via a metal option.
DDR2 SDRAM Development
Main memory for applications such as servers, workstations and PCs requires DRAM to deliver high-speed and high-density products that match rapidly evolving CPU performance. As a technology leader, Elpida is developing a portfolio of DDR2 products with varying densities to meet the demands of the industry, and to position itself as a leading DDR2 supplier.
Elpida's 1 Gigabit DDR2 SDRAM devices will form the basis for a number of industry-leading high-density modules including 4 Gigabyte registered dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) for servers and workstations, 2 Gigabyte unbuffered DIMMs for desktops, and 2 Gigabyte small-outline DIMMs (SO-DIMMs) for notebooks. Elpida's newly developed 0.10 process and circuit technologies will also be applied to 512 Megabit DDR2 products, thus improving the already existing supply of high-performance DRAM devices.
Availability
Samples of Elpida's 1 Gigabit DDR2 SDRAM devices are scheduled to ship in November 2003, with volume shipment projected for early 2004.
